So, how do I cook these things?
Chickpeas
Stovetop: Soak Chickpeas overnight in cold water in a large saucepan or pot. Drain and rinse. Add water to 1 inch above Chickpeas and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. Skim and discard foam that accumulates, and check for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy! (Can be soaked and cooked in the pot with Purple Barley at the same time using these instructions.)
Instant Pot: See recipe on Amy & Jacky’ Pressure Cook Recipes
Cracked Purple Barley
Stovetop: Add water to 1 inch above cracked Purple Barley and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy! (Can be cooked in the pot with Lentils at the same time using these instructions.)
Instant Pot: Not recommended unless your recipe instructs you to do so: it can loose it’s shape and end up mushy if cooked too long.
Farro
Stovetop: Add water to 1 inch above Farro and simmer 30 to 45 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy!
Instant Pot: Use the “Whole Farro” option in Instant Pot Farro from the Simple Veganista
Flax
Flax can be ground in a coffee grinder to make flaxseed meal. This makes the nutrients in flax more easily absorbed by your body. It can be sprinkled ground or whole on granola, salads and cooked into breads and baked goods. I sneak it into cookies all the time!
Lentils
Stove top: Add water to 1 inch above Lentils and simmer 20 to 25 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy! (Can be cooked in the pot with Cracked Purple Barley at the same time using these instructions.)
Instant Pot: Not recommended (Unless your own recipe instructs you to do so: if cooked too long, they turn mushy.)
Mustard
Hot brown mustard is quite hot on it’s own, but cooking and pickling tame it down. Check out our Recipes page for our favorite brown mustard recipe!
Purple Barley
Stovetop: Soak Purple Barley overnight in cold water in a large saucepan or pot. Drain and rinse. Add water to 1 inch above Purple Barley and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy! (Can be soaked and cooked in the pot with Chickpeas at the same time using these instructions.)
Instant Pot: Cover with an inch of water and pressure cook for 40 minutes (the kernels often burst with this method, so not as pretty, but just as tasty!)
Rye Berries
Stovetop: Add water to 1 inch above above Rye Berries and simmer 30 to 35 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain, rinse, and enjoy!
Instant Pot: Use the same recipe as Wheat Berries- Instant Pot Wheat Berries Recipe on Real and Vibrant
Split Peas
Stovetop: Add water to 1 inch above Split Peas and simmer 25-30 minutes, checking for preferred doneness. Drain and rinse, or reserve liquid for soup!
